ARTIST BIO
For me, drawing has always been a matter of line, intensity, and control. I do not seek to depict recognizable figures; I have always been fascinated by abstract art because it allows each viewer’s mind to wander and discover hidden details.
Intuitive mark-making is my way of processing thought. When working, I lose myself in the repetition of the line. I feel the need to fill the paper without leaving empty spaces, playing with line weight, and connecting fine lines with heavy strokes. It is a rhythm where time disappears and internal noise transforms into meticulous detail.
In my series PENSIERI, the paper is filled completely: it reflects a mind racing at full speed, of thoughts intertwining with intensity. In my most recent work, the intention shifts toward freedom and contemplation. The lines continue to flow in the same direction, but now they give way to white space, creating a sense of openness, silence, and breathing room.
STATEMENT
Joan Perez Fernandez (Venezuela, 1986) is a Miami-based visual artist and advertising professional. Raised in a family deeply connected to design, fashion, furniture design, photography, and the visual arts, she developed an early sensitivity to graphic detail, calligraphy, and the structural precision of technical drawing.
With a degree in Advertising and an extensive background in audiovisual production, content creation, and talent direction in Caracas, Venezuela, Joan translates that compositional discipline and photographic eye into fine art.
Her practice explores abstract ink drawing on paper through a self-taught, intuitive approach guided by the methodical repetition of patterns and absolute control over the line.
Joan’s work navigates the psychology of the stroke and the exploration of mental states, ranging from the extreme density and saturation of space—characteristic of the series—
